Shantel & Assistant Christy’s Camping Food, Games & Tips Around Red Deer

Shantel & Assistant Christy’s Camping

Food, Games & Tips Around Red Deer!

Following up the last blog on where to camp around Red Deer and Central Alberta, is today’s blog on my and Assistant Christy’s “Camping Food, Games, Fun & Tips”. Whether you are roughing it or living it up at a campground, it is nice to be prepared! Christy likes to meal plan, (she’s the super organized kind) where you plan each meal ahead of time, possibly even prepare most of it ahead of time so it only has to be cooked, divide up the meals between each family and BOOM you are ready to go. This makes meals easy! Sometimes, there’s not enough time to plan that far ahead, like if you have a super busy work week or it’s a last minute camp trip. So, you run to the grocery store and raid your fridge at home and wing it for the weekend. Regardless, we never seem to go hungry out camping! There are so many great camping foods or is it that food just tastes better when you’re camping? From prepared (at home) breakfast casseroles, classic bacon and eggs, to burgers, steak~potato dinner, ribs and chicken to whole turkey dinners. And don’t forget the smores, I really want to try the smores made on the rake or Smoreos! We’ve done it all and it all can be done when camping! Mind you, I don’t think we ever did a turkey dinner when we were tenters…. Check out these Great Ideas we definitely want to try out this camping season! Please let us know if you have any great camping recipes!

While we love our camping food, let’s move on to the even more fun stuff: Games & Activities! We all love to relax around the fire or find a nice quiet spot to chill out for a bit. But for Christy and I, that can only last so long! We like to play games and have fun! There’s the classics like bocce ball, ladder ball, flying kites, scavenger hunts, walks or quad rides, sports like volleyball and soccer, washer toss, playing card games and fireworks! And the newer games like beer pong, flippy cup, glow in the dark ring toss and beersbie. This year, we are definitely going to try out some of these exciting looking games! What is your favourite camping activity?

Now, for some camping tips! From the time Christy was a tenter to now, where she keeps her RV in one spot, she has always used plastic bins to pack her stuff. Clothes in one, unpack them, it’s now the laundry bin, clothes get washed and go back into the bin. Same for food, pack dry food in a bin, unpack it (or keep in bin if tenting), recycles and left over food comes home. I like to use small containers or bins in my cupboards of my trailer to keep everything organized and from sliding around while in transport. I’ve seen many campers use a big blue water jug with a hand pump for easy access drinking water. Christy’s friend makes fire starters out of cardboard egg cartons, old candle wax and saw dust, works every time! For the out-backers use an old 5 gallon pail (with or without a toilet seat), kitty litter in the bottom, walk  a little bit away from camp, use your make shift bathroom and hang in a tree for the next time, lol! Don’t forget your first aid supplies, toilet paper, hand washing/sanitizing supplies, warm clothes/blankets, extra footwear, waterproof matches, flashlights/lanterns, lots of water, duct tape (for everything from fixing tears to closing wounds), bug spray and sunscreen and chairs! I could go on and on…. Mostly, just be prepared for your family’s needs and know the area if you’re random camping out west!

Camping in Central Alberta!

Camping in Central Alberta!

Well, it is that time of year again! What time, you ask? Time to get out camping!! I am super stoked this year as my husband and I just bought a trailer to go camping in! I can’t wait to get out there! Now I’m thinking, where should we go? Which led me to write this blog. There’s a ton of camping right here around Red Deer and in Central Alberta.

For campgrounds in Central Alberta, click the picture:

If you prefer to rough it a bit, you can drive a little further to the Rocky Mountain House or Caroline area to camp, although some of the campgrounds are fully equipped with all the amenities. It is beautiful out there and has some amazing camping, from campgrounds to “random camping” spots! Here is a list of campgrounds near Rocky Mountain House.  “Random Camping” is where you just drive and find a spot (that’s not on someone’s property). There are some great spots if you know where to go. According to Assistant Christy, some of her favourites she used to frequent were Jack Fish Lake (drive past the campground to find many random spots), South Fork RoadRam RiverChungo Road and west of Caroline on highway 54 to the Forestry Trunk Road! She also says it’s been about 7 years since she’s been out there, so best to get more info before heading out to those areas. There’s tons of trails for ATV’s, rivers, streams, lakes and views to knock your socks off! Some of these areas can accommodate RV’s, but some cannot, so make sure you know what you’re getting into!

Where’s your favourite place to camp? In a campground? In the “Boonies”? Or somewhere in between?

9 Fun Winter Activities in Red Deer, Alberta!

9 Fun Outside Winter Activities in Red Deer & Alberta!

Now that winter is upon us, I’ve been thinking about some fun activities to do this winter!  Weirdly most of them start with S!

Skiing & Snowboarding: In Red Deer, we are lucky to have our own Canyon Ski Resort!  Lots of runs for skiers and snowboarders of all difficulties!  We are also close enough to drive to the many of the ski resorts in the mountains.

Snowshoeing & Cross-Country Skiing: Click trails to see maps of the trails in Red Deer.  You could also drive to Kananaskis Country or Strathcona Wilderness Centre.  It’s great exercise and beautiful scenery.

Skating & Hockey/Ringette: There are many options for skating in Red Deer.  If it’s a little too cold outside, you can hit one of the many arenas public skating times: Collicutt Centre, Red Deer Arena, G.H. Dawe, Kinex, Kinsmen  If it’s nice enough to skate outside, there are boarded and un-boarded rinks in every neighbourhood plus Bower Ponds and Family Skating Oval (at the Golden Circle).  Click for a complete list of all outdoor rinks in Red Deer.

Sledding:  So many options for contraptions to ride down a snowy hill!  Crazy Carpet, tobogan, saucer, GT Snow Racer, tube, etc.  So much fun to be had!  As long as there’s a hill, there’s a way (corny, lol)!  Click for a list of the best sledding spots in Red Deer! Canyon Ski Resort also has a snow tubbing hill!

Snowball Fight: What great childhood memories I have of snowball fights!  Build a wall for protection and have a bunch of snowballs made up OR a spur of the moment make them as you need them snowball fight!  As long as it’s all in good fun!

Snowman Building: I love driving down the street and seeing snowmen in front yards!  There’s the big snowmen that you rolled and rolled and rolled to get the base, body and head as big as possible, only to not be able to lift them up to stack them or the smaller ones that you could fit your own toque on. With stick arms, rock eyes and a carrot nose (that the dog usually ate), you know there is always a lot of effort put into a snowman.  And they are always smiling and waving!

Snowmobiling:  While most riders I know, head to Revelstoke, Golden or Valemount in the mountains, you can always hop on your snowmobile and hit a field or lake around Red Deer.  Here’s a map of snowmobile clubs and trails in Alberta!

Sleigh Rides:  Looking for something a little different? How about a sleigh ride?  In Red Deer, sleigh rides are offered at Heritage Ranch. You can also venture to different places in Alberta.

Ice Fishing:  On a nice day, just a chair, your ice fishing rod/tackle and a hole is all you’ll need for ice fishing. On a cold day, it is definitely nice to have an ice fishing shack or tent to keep warm in.  Gather your family or some friends and enjoy the day on the lake! For the more hard-core ice-fishermen/women try this overnighter at Gull Lake!
